CHD is caused by a narrowing of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart, and often results in a heart attack. American Heart Month reminds us to learn the risk factors of heart disease and to keep our heart healthy. Some of the risk factors for CHD are beyond your control, but most can be modified through healthy lifestyle behaviors. A healthy lifestyle will help you modify the risk factors in your control:
  • Be tobacco free
  • Eat a healthy diet - more fruits and veggies, low fat meats and dairy, less sodium, limit saturated fat and cholesterol, avoid trans fats, drink alcohol in moderation
  • Control calories to achieve and maintain a healthy weight
  • Be active - move more, increase your heart rate for at least 30 minutes each day
