Case Study: A Contracting Firm Uses Wellness To Build a Healthier Company

Not all wellness providers are the same. A privately held general contracting firm found that out when it chose a lower-priced wellness vendor over Viverae to implement its wellness program. The contracting firm quickly realized that the vendor it selected was unable to provide the level of reporting and analytics it needed to show ROI. In 2008, after one year with the other vendor, the contracting firm asked Viverae to step in and become its wellness partner.

Putting Health Management into Action

Leveraging Viverae’s proprietary technology platform, the Viverae Health Management System (VHMS), the contracting firm’s executive team spearheaded a worksite wellness program that could flex and bend with the company’s unique culture and needs.

When consulting with Viverae’s account management team, the contracting firm decided to offer an incentive range of $300 to $750 for each employee and spouse (up to a potential $1,500) to participate in the program. Over a two-year period, this incentive drove participation levels to 77 percent in 2010.

Behind the scenes, the contracting firm implemented several of Viverae’s premium products, including onsite tobacco cessation and claims analytics. Viverae also provided biometric screening services for all program participants and conducted personal outreach to increase engagement.

Achieving Results

By measuring important health stats on an annual basis through Biometric Screenings and MHA results, Viverae has been able to demonstrate clearly that the contracting firm’s employees are becoming healthier:

  • Employees with 5+ risk factors: In the category with the greatest number of risk factors and the potential for the highest medical costs, the number of employees decreased by 3.3 percent over the previous year.
  • Employees with 0-2 risk factors: The group with the lowest risk and potential for the lowest medical costs improved by 5.3 percent over the previous year.
  • Overall: The contracting firm saw an aggregate reduction in employee risk factors of 19.0 percent, which included decreases in total cholesterol — a leading cause of heart disease — as well as risk factors associated with poor nutrition and lack of exercise.

Because the contracting firm chose to use Viverae’s claims analytics program, a premium Viverae product, it was able to gain insight from this valuable data. Viverae helped the firm track medical claims data on a month-to-month basis to gain a true snapshot of the program’s return on investment (ROI). As a result, the contracting firm learned that over 12 months, each participant in the program spent $395 less than non-participants.
