Case Study: Oil and Gas Firm Achieves Wellness Participation with a Diverse Employee Population Operating from
Motivating employees to participate in a workplace wellness program can be a challenge for companies. But for an oil and gas firm with 22 locations and a diverse employee population, driving participation in a worksite health management program required extraordinary flexibility, an emphasis on frequent targeted communications and the right incentive plan.
Putting Health Management into Action
The oil and gas firm partnered with Viverae’s account management team to create a two-year, two-stage incentive plan. The first year centered on employee awareness and evolved into a more robust engagement and achievement program in the second year. The account management team gave special consideration to the firm’s emphasis on culture and creating a positive experience for employees as it implemented Viverae’s proprietary Health Management System with a specific emphasis on personal outreach and biometric screenings.
Based on insight gained in the first year of the program, the company decided to focus its health management program on two main components: smoking cessation and weight management. Employees were able to reduce their health care premiums by earning incentive points, and non-tobacco users received preferred rates.
Achieving Results
The oil and gas company has seen an overwhelming majority of its workforce participate in its wellness program since its inception, and program metrics show an overall improvement in workers’ health.
- Employee participation reached 76 percent in the first year and increased to 78 percent in the second year.
- Employees at risk due to high-level LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol —both of which increase a person’s chances of developing heart disease — were reduced by a combined 9 percent.
- Employees increased their physical activity by 4.9 percent.
- After one year, the company was able to show over a 2 percent decrease in one of the most difficult categories: high-risk tobacco use.
