Case Study: Telecom Services Company Connects Its Employees with Wellness and Sees Results
Like many companies today, this publicly held telecommunications services company with over 7,000 employees was dealing with skyrocketing medical and pharmaceutical costs. Many of these costs were driven by lifestyle factors that could be managed or even corrected over time with a health management program.
Putting Health Management into Action
Although the company had no prior experience working with a wellness provider, it contracted with Viverae to develop a flexible health management solution that would encourage employee participation, generate specific reports and provide onsite services when needed.
After developing a baseline of data from biometric screenings and member health assessments, the Viverae account management team developed a program that would decrease the number of employees at risk in the following benchmark categories: LDL levels, tobacco use, physical activity and nutrition.
The program was designed to leverage our proprietary technology platform, the Viverae Health Management System (VHMS), and incorporate claims analytics and outreach initiatives that included challenges, webinars and highly targeted programs. The incentive program would include a $25,000 grand prize drawing, as well as other drawings for prizes and gift cards.
Achieving Results
The telecom company was able to show impressive decreases in risk factors among participants after the first year of the program:
- Employees with 5+ risk factors: The category with the greatest number of risk factors and the highest potential health care costs saw a decrease of 3.0 percent as over 225 members moved into lower risk categories.
- Employees with 1-2 risk factors: The group with the lowest risk and potential for health care costs improved by 5.5 percent as nearly 400 employees moved into the lowest risk categories.
The telecommunications company also opted to use claims analytics, a specialty product that captures claims data on a quarterly basis. Viverae is able to show how participation and program cost relate to medical savings and create a true ROI analysis. As a result of the wellness program, the telecommunications company learned that:
- Each employee who participated in the program spent $472 less in health care in the most recent 12 months than non-participants.
- Employees who participated in the program saw their health care cost increase only 10.4 percent, far less than the 27.7 percent increase for non-participants.
